Psalm 117 is only two verses long but it encapsulates the essence of worship. It's a bit like a bottle of really expensive perfume. It usually comes in a tiny bottle and you don't get much for your money but what you do get is really concentrated. Here's what I think we can learn about the essential essence of worship from these two concentrated verses:
Praise - be thankful, big up God, talk about the great things of God. Worship is vocal and joyful.
the Lord - ie God and no-one else. Worship is God centred.
all you nations - everybody, not just a chosen few. Worship is not elitist.
Extol him - go into raptures about how good God is.
all you peoples - every people group, every demographic, every age group, every race, every class. Worship is for anyone and everyone.
For great is his love towards us - The reason we love God is that he loved us. It is all about a love relationship. Worship is love expressed.
The faithfulness of the Lord endures forever - this love relationship will go on into eternity because the Lord never changes in character. He is always true to us and therefore will always deserve our praise.
Praise the Lord! - Get on and do it! Don't just talk about it, praise him - all day, every day. Think about the love of God and his faithfulness whenever you can and put praise into practice!
